Growing up in Ecuador, Geraldine Barnuevo’s childhood was filled with vibrant memories of playful monkeys and beautiful rivers in the Amazon. But these idyllic scenes were often overshadowed by the harsh realities of oil spills in the 1970s and 80s, highlighting the serious impact of human activities on the environment.

As a teenager, Geraldine found her voice through the model United Nations, advocating for environmental justice. She was deeply moved by the resilience of communities affected by oil spills and passionately argued that multinational corporations should maintain high standards of care everywhere.

Her passion led her to a career at General Motors (GM), where she aimed to drive change from within. Starting at a GM plant in Ecuador, Geraldine initiated environmental education programs, empowering shift leaders to adopt sustainable practices and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.

Today, in her leadership roles at GM, Geraldine continues to champion sustainability, guiding the company towards greater environmental responsibility and community impact. Her unwavering dedication inspires the next generation to embrace nature’s call and work towards a more sustainable world.
